Michael J. Akerman, MD, FACP, FCCP
Michael J. Akerman, MD, FACP, FCCP is a board-certified pulmonary physician with Highland Medical, P.C. Dr. Akerman serves as the Director of Pulmonology for both Highland Medical, P.C., and Nyack Hospital. He holds American Board of Internal Medicine certifications in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine, Sleep Medicine, and Geriatrics.
Prior to joining Highland Medical, P.C., Dr. Akerman was an attending physician specialist at Downstate University Hospital and Kings County Hospital Center, both located in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Akerman was the founder and director of the Asthma Center of Excellence at the Downstate Medical Center—University Hospital of Brooklyn, and founder and director of the Asthma Care Committee and Asthma Care Clinic at Kings County Hospital. He also served as the Director of Pulmonary Exercise Testing at Kings County Hospital Center. Most recently, he served as the Medical Director of the Asthma Program at the Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.
Dr. Akerman currently holds a faculty position as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the State University of New York—Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. For more than 25 years, Dr. Akerman taught medical students, resident physicians and pulmonary and critical care medicine fellows in training. In addition, he has extensive private practice experience in pulmonary and sleep medicine. For many years, he even made house calls to care for his geriatric patients. His other focuses have included COPD care, smoking cessation, and pulmonary rehab.
Dr. Akerman has managed many grants, and held the principal investigator (PI) position for a multi-year grant from the New York State Department of Health addressing Community Asthma Prevention in Brooklyn. He was PI for a prestigious two-year demonstration project from the National Asthma Control Initiative of the National Institutes of Health, which addressed professional implementation of the asthma management guidelines. He has also completed several phase 3 and phase 4 pharmaceutical drug research studies. Dr. Akerman has served as organizer and course director for accredited professional conferences on Asthma Care, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), and as chairman for international conferences on Contemporary Medicine and Jewish Medical Ethics.
Dr. Akerman received his medical doctorate from University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, NY. He completed his residency at The Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at SUNY—Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY.
David L. Hodes, MD
Dr. Hodes is a board-certified physician with subspecialties in critical care and pulmonary disease and practices at Palisades Primary Care and Pulmonary Medicine, in West Nyack. He engenders trust and confidence by demonstrating compassion and empathy in the delivery of his care. He is sensitive to his patients’ psychological well-being and identifies with the emotional concerns of his patients and their family members.
Dr. Hodes is Attending Physician in Pulmonary Diseases and Internal Medicine at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. He has received numerous awards, including: New York Magazine “Best Doctors in New York” (2000, 2001); Castle Connolly Top Doctors (2000 – 2015); and The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award for Medical Humanism.
Dr. Hodes received his medical doctorate from New York University Medical School, New York, NY. He completed his Internship and Residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York, NY, and his Pulmonary Fellowship at New York University-Bellevue Hospital.
