Meet ROSA: Montefiore Nyack Hospital’s New Robotic System

New technology helps orthopedic surgeons optimize knee replacement surgery results. Montefiore Nyack Hospital now has a new tool to assist orthopedic surgeons in planning and performing total knee replacement surgery. Zimmer Biomet’s Robotic Surgical Assistant knee replacement system, or ROSA, is readily available to patients at Montefiore Nyack Hospital and helps our orthopedic surgeons create a pre-operative surgery plan that optimizes implant placement and incision points.

While the procedure is performed entirely by the surgeon, the highly specialized ROSA robotic system is utilized for knees only and features a robotic arm that is connected wirelessly to a computer navigation system to improve the accuracy of the cutting instruments. Throughout the surgery, the ROSA robot provides surgeons with instant feedback on the alignment and ligament balancing of the implant and specific data about the patient’s knee. This information helps the surgeon ensure the knee implant is properly positioned for the patient’s body.

“The ROSA robot helps us be more accurate, with less variation in results,” said Jordan Simon, MD, Director of The Joint Replacement Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. “Patients coming to Montefiore Nyack Hospital for a knee replacement will have good results whether they have traditional knee surgery or robot-assisted surgery. A new knee will help them get back to the activities they enjoy.”
