YOUR BREAST HEALTH PARTNER

Women generally know they should start getting screened for breast cancer at some point, but the details of screening can be confusing. Women should begin making a mammogram appointment annually starting at 40, or earlier if they have a family history of breast cancer.

When to schedule

Schedule the week after your menstrual period. If you’ve gone through menopause, any time is fine!

What to bring

Bring prior mammogram images if this is your first visit with The Breast Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital.

What to avoid wearing

Deodorants, antiperspirants, powders, lotions, creams and perfumes may contain metallic particles that could be visible on your mammogram.

How to reduce discomfort

Take aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen an hour before your mammogram to help ease discomfort.

Find support

It’s not unusual to feel worried or anxious about having a mammogram. Remind your friend, your mom, your daughter to be screened each year—and make your mammogram appointments together.
