Emergency Care: What to Expect

When you arrive at the FJ Borelli Family Emergency Center, you’ll be assessed by the triage nurse who will identify your condition and determine how quickly you should be seen. You may be asked to wait for a brief period before being escorted into the treatment area. At times, people who arrive after you may be seen first if they have more severe injuries or illnesses. Our goal is to provide high-quality, compassionate care as quickly as possible to every patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are people who arrived after me being seen before me?

All emergency departments see patients based on the severity of illness (acuity). The most severe illnesses and injuries are seen first.

Why can’t I eat or drink?

Some treatments and testing are negatively impacted by eating and drinking. To avoid delays in your treatment and care please do not eat or drink until someone from your healthcare team tells you it is ok to do so.

Why do I need an IV, and what is involved in this process?

An IV is beneficial in multiple ways:
•    Allows blood to be drawn, IV medications and fluids to be easily administered and some diagnostic imaging requires contrast to be given in the IV.  Medications and fluids can be given easily and quickly.
•    In the ED, while starting your IV, the Nurse may draw your blood. You can anticipate a “rainbow” of tubes, which may look like a lot of tubes/blood, but in reality, is approximately 1 tablespoon of blood. The extra tubes may be used in case the doctor orders other tests during your visit. This may prevent you from having to be poked with another needle.

Why is my visit taking so long?

There are a variety of factors involved with developing your plan of care. At times you may be:
•    Awaiting test results
•    Ongoing care coordination between care providers and other disciplines
•    You will often see healthcare professionals sitting at the desk, ensuring your medical record is accurate and up to date, reviewing labs and imaging, and taking calls from consultants.

Healthcare professionals may be called away for other incoming medical emergencies. We appreciate your patience during these times.

Why am I in the hallway?

We understand that being in the hallway is not ideal, and we truly appreciate your patience. At times, you may be in the hallway because:
•    We want to make sure everyone gets seen and treated as quickly as possible.
•    We prioritize rooms for patients who require cardiac monitoring, oxygen, and/or isolation.

Even in the hallway, you’re still closely monitored and cared for by the same medical team.

Is there a pediatric section of your Emergency Department?

All Emergency Department providers are board-certified to care for our pediatric patients. During peak hours of operation, we open a separate area in the Emergency Department designed to care for our pediatric patients, with a designated pediatrician.
