Family enjoying a summer day together on the beach.

Some of the best summer memories are made with visits from the little ones in your life. If children are making a trip to see you this summer, kid-proofing your medicine cabinet is key to ensure everyone stays safe.

Dropped pills can be easily missed. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends vacuuming the floors and rugs in your home and look for any medications that may have accidentally fallen on the ground, as children may find them. Those expecting young visitors should also make sure that any vitamins and medications, particularly those in gummy form, are stored away in a high cabinet.

In addition to relatives making sure their spaces are kid safe, parents traveling with medications should also be mindful of how they’re packaging them, said William Greenhut, DO, MPH, FACEP, associate medical director of the Emergency Department at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. Take extra care to ensure medications are sealed in childproof containers and stored in a safe place when you reach your destination
